The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has warned that the recent military escalation in the Middle East has led to a rapid deterioration in humanitarian conditions across several countries in the region, noting that the situation is evolving into a growing humanitarian emergency requiring urgent international attention.

According to UNHCR, the first waves of displacement in Lebanon began during the initial days of the escalation, with approximately 100,000 people displaced within the country due to ongoing military operations and security concerns. As hostilities continued and the scope of the escalation widened, displacement figures increased significantly. Recent humanitarian assessments indicate that the total number of internally displaced persons in Lebanon could approach 700,000 people.

At the same time, humanitarian reports indicate that thousands of Syrian refugees residing in Lebanon have returned to Syria in recent days as a result of deteriorating security conditions and concerns over further escalation. Preliminary estimates have also suggested that tens of thousands of people have been displaced within parts of Iran affected by the broader regional developments.

The United Nations noted that humanitarian teams are currently assessing the growing needs of affected populations, while humanitarian organizations face increasing challenges in delivering assistance and maintaining access to essential services. The most urgent needs include shelter, food assistance, healthcare services, water and sanitation, as well as protection support for vulnerable groups.

These developments illustrate how rapidly security escalations can translate into humanitarian crises, particularly in regions already affected by instability and displacement. They also highlight the importance of strengthening humanitarian monitoring and analytical capacities to better understand the evolution of crises and anticipate their humanitarian consequences. In such complex regional contexts, improving coordination among international humanitarian actors and local organizations remains critical to ensure timely response and effective allocation of humanitarian resources. Strengthening data sharing and knowledge generation also plays an essential role in supporting informed humanitarian decision-making and developing more effective responses to emerging crises.
