Guatemala - Volcanic eruption (ECHO 16 Mar 2025) Tue, 11 Mar 2025 12:28

  • Fuego volcano, located on the borders of Chimaltenango, Escuintla and Sacatepéquez Departments (central-western Guatemala), has been erupting since 9 March.
  • According to the INSIVUMEH and the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED), the ash column has reached more than 7,000 m above sea level and it is spreading towards the northwest, west and southwest direction at a distance of 50 km from the crater. Pyroclastic flows and effusive activity have also been recorded.
  • On 10 March, CONRED reported that 282 people have been preventively evacuated and sheltered in San Juan Alotenango, Sacatepéquez, in southern Guatemala. According to media, as of 11 March, more than 30,000 people have been warned to evacuate, and classes have been suspended.
  • The volcanic alert level has been raised to orange, and CONRED is monitoring the situation and advising people to stay away from the volcano and to be prepared to evacuate in case of emergency.

  • The activity of Fuego volcano, located on the borders of Chimaltenango, Escuintla, and Sacatepéquez departments, central-western Guatemala is ongoing since 9 March.
  • According to the National Institute for Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology, and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH), as of 11 March, the ash column reached up to 6,000 m above sea level, and spread towards the northwest and west direction at a distance up to 120 km from the crater. In addition, INSIVUMEH recorded pyroclastic flows and effusive activity, producing a 500 m high incandescent fountain above the crater.
  • CONRED and media report, as of 12 March, nearly 1,000 preventively evacuated people, of whom around 300 in one temporary accommodation centre in the area of the San Juan Alotenango municipality, Sacatepéquez department.
