Place: Sudan

Date: February 08, 2026

(Last update 02/04/2026 03:45:28 AM ) Prepared

Event Description

South Kordofan in Sudan is witnessing a sharp escalation in violence and armed confrontations between parties to the conflict, leading to a severe deterioration of security and living conditions. This escalation has resulted in the siege of large areas and obstruction of humanitarian access, placing civilians’ lives at risk and exacerbating their daily suffering.

Humanitarian Conditions

Civilians in South Kordofan are experiencing acute shortages of food, clean water, and healthcare due to the ongoing blockade and obstacles hindering access for humanitarian aid. This situation has forced many families into internal displacement or reliance on extremely limited resources, with older persons, children, and women facing heightened and continuous risks.

Security Situation

The escalation of violence has led to an unprecedented spread of clashes, with intermittent fighting between opposing groups across multiple locations in the region. These hostilities have disrupted civilian movement and led to the closure of some essential facilities, while many areas remain unsafe for humanitarian teams to access.

Organizations' Response

  • Continued operations by local humanitarian responders and NRC despite severe security constraints and access challenges.
  • Operation of community kitchens to support displaced families.
  • Evacuation of families from high-risk areas whenever possible.
  • Provision of emergency assistance, including food, cash support, shelter, water and sanitation services, as well as protection and education services where conditions allow.
  • Pre-positioning of shelter supplies and non-food items in nearby areas in anticipation of further displacement.
  • Most international organizations have scaled back their operations due to security risks, placing greater pressure on local responders.

Recommendations

Immediate:
  • Establish safe humanitarian corridors to ensure unimpeded access for aid delivery.
  • Scale up food assistance, safe drinking water provision, and temporary shelter.
  • Provide urgent medical support to affected families.
Short-term:
  • Strengthen local response teams with additional resources.
  • Establish safe distribution points near conflict lines.
Long-term:
  • Intensify international efforts to halt violence and pursue political solutions.
  • Support community rehabilitation and recovery programmes following the current wave of violence.
