Escalating Clashes in the Kordofan Region of Sudan Result in Casualties and Civilian Displacement

Event Description

Several areas in the Kordofan region in central Sudan witnessed an escalation in armed confrontations recently between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, amid the ongoing conflict that began in the country in 2023. Fighting broke out in multiple locations across North and South Kordofan, where heavy weapons and drones were reportedly used, causing damage to residential areas and civilian infrastructure.

Local media sources reported that the recent clashes resulted in the deaths of more than 50 people, with several civilians also injured. The violence forced many families to leave their homes and move toward safer areas within the region or to neighboring states. The Kordofan region holds strategic importance due to its geographic position linking Darfur with central Sudan, making it a recurrent theater of military operations.

These developments are taking place amid deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Sudan due to the ongoing armed conflict, economic instability, and the weakening of essential services. According to UN estimates, tens of millions of people in Sudan are expected to require humanitarian assistance in 2026, making the situation one of the largest humanitarian crises globally.

Millions of people have experienced internal and cross-border displacement since the outbreak in 2023. In areas affected by the clashes in Kordofan, families who fled their homes are facing serious challenges in accessing food, clean water, and healthcare services, particularly given the limited humanitarian resources and the difficulties in delivering aid to some conflict-affected areas.

Security conditions in the Kordofan region remain unstable, with intermittent clashes continuing in several locations and concerns about the potential expansion of military operations. Fighting has also disrupted transportation routes and supply lines, further complicating the delivery of humanitarian assistance to affected communities.

International reports indicate that the ongoing war in Sudan has resulted in a significant number of civilian casualties since the conflict began, while the warring parties continue to compete for control over different areas of the country.
