Event Description

Haiti continues to experience escalating violence linked to armed gangs, particularly in the capital Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas. The recent surge in clashes between armed groups and security forces has led to new waves of civilian displacement in several neighborhoods of the capital. Field reports indicate that ongoing violence has forced many families to flee their homes in search of safer areas. In addition, the deteriorating security environment has disrupted basic services and led to the closure of several schools and health facilities in the most affected areas.

Humanitarian Conditions

Haiti is facing one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the Caribbean due to the combined effects of armed violence, economic deterioration, and weak state institutions. According to United Nations estimates, approximately 6.4 million people in Haiti will require humanitarian assistance in 2026 as a result of continued insecurity and deteriorating living conditions. The number of internally displaced persons has also risen significantly. Current estimates indicate that around 1.4 million people have been internally displaced due to gang violence and insecurity, representing the highest displacement levels recorded in Haiti. At the same time, food insecurity remains a major concern. Recent analyses estimate that about 5.7 million people are experiencing acute food insecurity, driven by rising food prices, disrupted markets, and declining employment opportunities. Displaced families face serious challenges in accessing shelter, food, clean water, and healthcare services, while host communities are struggling to cope with the growing pressure on limited resources.

Security Situation

The security situation in Haiti remains highly unstable due to the widespread presence of armed gangs controlling large parts of Port-au-Prince. The expansion of gang activity has disrupted the movement of people and goods and has led to the closure of key roads, making humanitarian access to certain areas increasingly difficult. Continued insecurity raises concerns about further violence and its impact on the country’s social and economic stability.

Organizations' Response

United Nations agencies and international humanitarian organizations continue to provide emergency assistance to affected populations in Haiti. These efforts include food assistance, healthcare services, and water and sanitation support for displaced communities. Humanitarian actors are also implementing nutrition programs for children and pregnant women and providing cash assistance to the most vulnerable households. However, ongoing insecurity in several areas continues to limit humanitarian access and restrict the ability of organizations to expand assistance to communities most in need.

Recommendations

  • Strengthen humanitarian coordination to ensure assistance reaches the most affected areas.

  • Expand food assistance and cash support programs for displaced households.

  • Support essential healthcare services in displacement areas and host communities.

  • Improve safe humanitarian access to areas affected by violence.

  • Strengthen civilian protection programs, particularly for women and children in high-risk areas.
