Event Description
Eastern Chad has been experiencing a growing influx of refugees fleeing the ongoing conflict in Sudan since April 2023, particularly from the Darfur region and other western areas of the country.
Humanitarian reports indicate that thousands of refugees have continued to cross into Chad in recent months. Many arrive on foot or through limited transportation after escaping armed attacks and violence in their communities. The prolonged conflict in Sudan has generated one of the largest displacement crises in the region, with Chad becoming one of the primary destinations for civilians fleeing violence in Darfur.
Humanitarian Conditions
Chad is facing increasing humanitarian pressure as a result of the continued arrival of refugees from Sudan. According to estimates from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, approximately 1.1 million Sudanese refugees have arrived in Chad since the outbreak of the Sudan conflict in 2023.
Many refugees are currently living in temporary camps or informal settlements near the border, where access to shelter, food, clean water, and healthcare services remains limited. At the same time, host communities in eastern Chad are experiencing growing strain on already limited resources, which further exacerbates humanitarian vulnerabilities in the region.
Security Situation
Organizations' Response
United Nations agencies and international humanitarian organizations are expanding their response efforts in eastern Chad to support both refugees and host communities.
Current response activities include the provision of emergency shelter, food assistance, water and sanitation services, healthcare, as well as protection and psychosocial support programs. However, humanitarian actors report that available resources remain insufficient to meet the growing needs as refugee arrivals continue.
Recommendations
Strengthen international support for humanitarian response in eastern Chad.
Expand food assistance and emergency shelter programs for newly arrived refugees.
Support healthcare, water, and sanitation services in refugee camps.
Enhance assistance to host communities affected by the refugee influx.
Improve humanitarian coordination to ensure an effective and sustainable response.
