Place: El Fasher - Sudan

Date: February 21, 2026

(Last update 03/04/2026 04:51:33 AM )

Event Description

An independent international fact-finding mission mandated by the United Nations reported that actions committed in and around El Fasher bear the hallmarks of genocide, including mass killings, sexual violence, torture, and the imposition of living conditions intended to destroy non-Arab ethnic groups.

In parallel statements, Sudan’s Ambassador to the United Nations affirmed that what is taking place in El Fasher constitutes genocide, pointing to the targeting of civilians on ethnic grounds and the obstruction of humanitarian aid to affected areas.

Humanitarian Conditions

The humanitarian situation in El Fasher is rapidly deteriorating, with rising civilian casualties, large-scale forced displacement, and severe shortages of food, water, and healthcare services. Humanitarian organizations face major access constraints, increasing the risk of famine and acute malnutrition, particularly among women and children.

Security Situation

Security conditions in and around El Fasher remain highly unstable, with ongoing hostilities and indications of escalating violence against civilians. Intermittent fighting and the absence of safe corridors continue to hinder evacuations and the delivery of humanitarian assistance.

Organizations' Response

The United Nations and human rights organizations have called for urgent international investigations and accountability for those responsible for the violations. They have also urged the protection of civilians and the establishment of safe humanitarian corridors. Some humanitarian agencies are providing limited food and medical assistance in accessible areas, despite significant security and logistical constraints.

Recommendations

  • Establish immediate and safe humanitarian corridors to El Fasher and surrounding areas.

  • Strengthen civilian protection mechanisms, with particular attention to women and children.

  • Support international investigations and ensure accountability for crimes committed.

  • Scale up emergency humanitarian funding and response to meet the basic needs of displaced and affected populations.
