Course Overview

This specialized program provides a comprehensive framework for developing the leadership and management capacities of staff working in local humanitarian organizations, with the aim of enhancing their effectiveness and enabling them to lead teams and projects efficiently, even in complex and highly challenging environments. The program is grounded in the philosophy that effective leadership is the cornerstone of success and sustainability in humanitarian action.

The training focuses on strengthening transformational leadership skills, building an inspiring shared vision, and fostering an organizational culture that supports creativity and innovation. It includes practical training on managing culturally diverse teams, developing effective humanitarian communication skills, active listening and empathy, and building relationships based on trust and mutual respect. The program also covers decision-making under pressure and uncertainty, as well as constructive conflict management approaches that enhance team cohesion.

In addition, the program addresses strategic planning for humanitarian organizations through analysis of the internal and external environment, formulation of actionable objectives and strategies, and development of operational plans along with monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. It offers practical applications through case studies and scenario-based exercises that reflect real challenges faced by organizations operating with limited resources, with a strong emphasis on context-appropriate and locally relevant solutions.

The training further develops skills in leading organizational change and managing resistance in a transparent and human-centered manner, while emphasizing the promotion of transparency, accountability, and integrity within organizations. It also addresses staff health and well-being by equipping leaders with the ability to identify signs of burnout and foster a healthy and balanced work environment.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, participants are expected to have:

Course Methodology

The program is designed using an interactive and practice-oriented approach, tailored to the realities and constraints of local organizations in the Global South:

  • Interactive lectures: Introduction to core concepts of leadership, institutional transformation, and strategic planning, supported by disaster recovery principles
  • Group workshops: Analysis of case studies from local organizations operating in Global South contexts—examining challenges, opportunities, and lessons learned—through facilitated group discussions.
  • Practical exercises and simulations: Including decision-making under pressure scenarios and simulations focused on early recovery project planning.
  • Guided discussions: Encouraging participants to share experiences, reflect on leadership strengths and gaps within their organizations, and explore ways to overcome local constraints related to resources, staffing, and partnerships.
  • Institutional planning sessions: Design of an actionable “Recovery Roadmap” to be implemented after the training, including clear objectives and monitoring indicators.
  • Network-building and peer empowerment: Supporting participants in building and sustaining networks of local leaders during and beyond the program, fostering knowledge exchange, mutual support, and strengthened local leadership in humanitarian action.

Module One: General Framework of Disaster Management in the Global South

  • The Disaster Management Cycle: From preparedness and response to recovery and reconstruction.
  • Humanitarian Context Challenges: Emergencies, conflicts, limited resources, and cultural diversity.

Module Two: Humanitarian Leadership and Crisis Management

  • Values-Based Humanitarian Leadership
  • Leadership grounded in humanitarian values and principles.
  • Core humanitarian principles: humanity, neutrality, independence, and impartiality.
  • Translating values into daily leadership practices.
  • Balancing humanitarian imperatives with operational and organizational considerations.
